First National Day on Writing!

Nothing warms my heart more.

The U. S. Senate has declared October 20th, 2009 as the first National Day on Writing.

The day is meant to:

· Celebrate the foundational place of writing in Americans’ personal, professional, and civic lives.
· Point to the importance of writing instruction and practice at every grade level, for every student and in every subject area from preschool through university.
· Emphasize the lifelong process of learning to write and composing for different audiences, purposes, and occasions.
· Recognize the scope and range of writing done by the American people and others and honor the use of the full range of media for composing.
· Encourage Americans to write and enjoy and learn from the writing of others.

I couldn’t have said it better myself and may I say, it’s about time.  I hope every writer out there continues to do what they love and create beauty.  Various events are being hosted throughout the country to celebrate this day.  I hope you partake in the celebration today and every other day.

Time to snark about the administration giving Fox a hard time? Or even Karl Denninger over at Marketticker.org? Writing is all well and good, unless you start using *words* to criticize people in power or challenge assumptions, apparently.

Oh yes, it’s always a two-way street. Let’s just hope that some people are putting this official day to good use.
