Glee 1×09 ‘Wheels’

Glee wheelsI rarely sweat bullets for a show, but ‘Wheel’, the latest episode of Glee really had me worried.  Basically an episode dedicated to Artie and the handicap, it could have easily crossed a line that would have viewers in a rage.  Luckily, Glee is still about celebration at heart and successfully conveys its welcome to the underdog in all of us.

The Struggle

I definitely have an emotional connection to the episode as a whole.  And why not?  Glee is well aware of the insecure outcast inside everyone and investigates the feeling without too much sugarcoating.  Besides Will & Grace, I’ve never heard the word “fag” used on prime time television.  It’s a daring and surprising moment, but ultimately it works because the message behind the storyline is taken seriously, unlike much of the show itself.

Coupled with Artie’s storyline and a major twist involving Sue and her sympathy for those with down syndrome, the episode  can be overwhelming at times.  I would say that ‘Wheels’ feels a bit overly emphatic, but I still applaud its bravery and straightforward acceptance of those who often suffer through prejudice in their high school years.

The Others

As the show develops, it’s nice to get a better sense of everybody else in the Glee club.  The episode works hard to establish characters like Artie, Tina and even the non-singers (the other blonde cheerleader is hilarious), which ultimately works out for the best.  They are, after all, the underdogs of the show.  While I love Lea Michele, there’s only so much of Rachel I can take, but I think the show is aware of that.

‘Wheels’ could’ve taken many wrong turns, but it’s a relief to see that the spirit of Glee is still alive and kicking.  Entertainment and singing aside, I’m pleased to see that the show has no intention to straying from the difficult subjects.  It may not have much in terms of plot points, but the message is clear and heartfelt.
