I’ll admit that watching the special disaster episodes of Desperate Housewives simultaneously makes me feel silly and exhilarated. Despite the implications, people watch disaster movies because they are entertaining. Still, ‘Boom Crunch’ does have the emotional anchor the show needs despite it aerial ascent from reality.
The Crash
If there was an Oceanic reference, I missed it. Either way, the one disappointment of the episode is the promise of a plane crash to begin with because ultimately, the plane is smaller than my apartment. Yes, the potential death of one of Wisteria Lane’s finest does amp up the tension a bit, but Desperate Housewives has produced much better disaster episodes before. Comparing ‘Boom Crunch’ to the tornado, grocery store shooting and fire episodes does not d make this episode look that great.
As I watched the plane descend upon Wisteria Lane, I don’t imagine a disaster as much as a really big mess to clean up afterwards.
The Neighborhood Terrors
Nevertheless, the majority of the episode still delivers plenty of goods. Katherine’s ultimate demise can be seen a mile away, but one can’t help but feel pity for the confused and heartbroken woman. Her storyline feels the most precarious of all, which makes the storyline more exciting to watch. I wonder how (and if) the show plans to reintegrate a housewife who has for all intents and purposes, fallen off the deep end.
The blowup between Gabby and Lynette seems to be on the shorter end of things than the epic war the previous episode promised. Even so, the very fact that Gabby and Lynette are at the center of all this makes it compelling to watch.
As for Angie…who knew? Now that it’s clear she’s on the run for killing someone, the real mystery becomes what kind of murder would deem her a terrorist? Even though I’m not an expert in the subject matter, murder and terrorist denote two very different meaning. While I’m ready for another progression in the Bolens mystery arc, it has been non stop intrigue from the beginning until now.
In Desperate Housewives proportions, ‘Boom Crunch’ ends the first half of the season with a whimper rather than a bang. It still entertained, but considering all that was promised, I’m not on the edge of my seat for the show to come back by any means.
