The funny thing about Grey’s Anatomy is that even in good intentions lie complications that can do harm. ‘Blink’ takes the world we are comfortable in and transforms it into something new in the blink of an eye.
Teddy
In a world full of medical procedures, it’s surprising the find that Teddy is the best complication of all. By simply inserting her presence, Cristina and Owen are able to shake up their relationship and discover unexplored emotional territories. Well, in a way…
In all the sharp turns at the end of the episode, the most shocking is Cristina disposing of Owen for the sake of her life. Despite her stunted emotional capability, the one thing that’s remained true is that she is a surgeon. To come from the highest point of her surgical career and have it taken away in the same day is horrifying (and yet another terrific performance by Sandra Oh). Some might find this to be a repeat of Burke, but it is the challenges of finding her place between love and life that remains the most intriguing for me.
Of course, Teddy’s role on the show has been mostly reactionary. It will be great to see her own spotlight in the future.
Alex and Lexie
It’s hard for me to take this development seriously because in the back of my mind, the obstacle is Katherine Heigl’s work schedule and not the characters’ conflicts. Therefore, Alex has women being tossed his way at every opportune moment. Can you blame the guy for regressing?
The real solution, the only solution is for Izzie to come back to Seattle and settle things once and for all. For now, the distraction that is Lexie and Alex seems like a blip on the radar. After all, this is definitely not the first time for Alex to make a mistake in the bedroom.
The Crossover
As the annual crossover event, good ol’ Addison always makes sure to shake things up when she arrives. However, it is Mark’s evolution that makes this storyline worthwhile. The man isn’t always given the fair chance in life, but that’s also why he’s been forgiven for being the second most screwed up guy at Seattle (Alex always wins this game). Now, the man has to feel all the things he doesn’t want to feel because he has no choice. Is this going to make or break Mark Sloan?
As Addison says, “Congratulations, you’re a father.” In other words, his life just got a lot more complicated.
And that seems to be the message in ‘Blink’. Complications arise from the smallest moments, and the big moments can sneak up on you when you’re least prepared. That is Grey’s Anatomy forte, and so far, it’s as captivating to watch as anything television has to offer.
