Based off of the 1891 German play of the same title, the musical is a frank look at teenagers’ exposure to sexuality and the ups and downs of their experiences.  As expected, the play was met with criticism to the point of being accused to be “pornographic.”  Now, take this material and add the musical sensibilities of Duncan Sheik and you’ve got the uniquely modern period piece, “Spring Awakening.”

I have to admit, I love the soundtrack.  Sure, the lyrics don’t carry as much story musical junkies are used to, but each number have so much emotion that one can easily bypass that.  The combination of controversial topics and the essence of youth makes this musical a standout.

Now that the musical is coming to Denver from December 1st until December 13th, I have no choice but to jump on the opportunity.  While the likes of Lea Michele and Jonathan Groff will not be present (Michele is starring on “Glee” and Groff will be guest starring), I cannot wait!
